Mr. Joseph McNeely

His story in brief
Days after a confrontation with a police officer, Joe McNeely was pulled from his Good Samaritan Hospital bed by a mob of men and lynched. What happened next?

His story in detail
A never-before-told narrative that challenges the reporting of the day, examining how police ignored warnings of violence, how newspapers inflamed the mob and how the killing was condemned in the white community more as a stain on the city’s reputation than for the terror inflicted on Black people.

Spoken word
This work by Hannah Hasan, commissioned by the Remembrance Project, imagines Joe McNeely’s life before his death, then describes the crime and its aftermath.

Memorialization
Images and words from a soil collection ceremony held at the site where Joe McNeely was killed, now Bank of America Stadium, where the NFL’s Carolina Panthers and MLS’s Charlotte FC play. Both the City of Charlotte and Tepper Sports & Entertainment have committed to erecting a historical marker on stadium grounds. Date and time for that installation will be posted on this site.
